no..get a desktop, its so much better for gaming if thats what you want from it
Dell XPS M1530 looks really good right now
Dell XPS M1730 if you save more
but really go for a gaming lan desktop for half that price
sure buut only if you really really like games more than money
of course its worth it
but just make sure you really want to slam that much down on one purchase. you can easily get a laptop for under 1k.
a desktop would be better for a gaming machine especially if you are going to spend 2k on it. also remember that you have to buy the games too.
You can get some decent gaming laptops these days. BUT! you could get yourself a pretty nice gaming desktop for that kind of money.
If you’re going to get a laptop for gaming, *don’t* get top of the line. You’re just wasting money, because laptop technology depreciates even faster than desktops. For example, I got an Acer 5920G notebook with 2GB RAM, an HD-DVD drive, HDMI out, and GeForce 8600M GT w/256 MB of RAM last summer for $1180 (marked down from $1650… quite a deal).
Now, it doesn’t run Crysis top-notch, but the Orange Box works great. Haven’t used it for too much.
Now the kicker — I’ve seen the laptop on sale now for $700.
I don’t know, I really got a laptop because I needed it for work, that’s the only real reason to get a gaming laptop IMO (or semi-gaming laptop). Just realize that the laptops that are $1300 and $2000+ right now will probably be the same price in a year.
Before about a month, ago I would have said no. At least, I’m not gonna’ plunk the necessary coins down, to buy a Alienware laptop to be able to play games on. I would build a ‘heck’ of a desktop! Since I build, and repair desktops, I also didn’t like it, that I have to fork out big bucks to get decent laptop hardware, that I can’t change out. Harddrives, and ram doesn’t do it for me. (I started working on five laptops around here for me. Trying to fix two or three of ‘em. Mostly just to say I can do it! lol!) The new Asus C90S does it for me! I may ’sound’ like a saleman, in what I’m about to print here, but that’s because I’m sold, on this sucker! This is the first laptop to have a changeable, upgradeable processor! The first one to have a changeable, upgradeable graphics card! (That’s right. I said graphics card! Look around. All the other laptops are soldered to the motherboard!) I’m not talkin’ a little processor either! Uses up to a Core2 Duo Extreme Edition 2.93GHz cpu! (processor) You can turn the laptop over, and take off a large panel, with 9 screws, and get to the harddrive, cpu, graphics card, and ram! The laptop is sold as a ‘barebones’ unit. Needs cpu, harddrive, ram, and graphics card. This way you can install what you need, and can afford now, and upgrade later as your wallet deems! The barebones unit comes with a 15.4 ColorShine Screen,(WSXGA 1680×1050 LCD), with a built-in 2.0 megapixel webcam,(Top, middle of LCD screen frame), swivels, and has Face Tracking feature. Comes with a large touchpad, and Fingerprint Reader. Has a HDMI port, eSata port, 3 USB 2.0 ports, built-in Bluetooth, DVD-RW 8x Dual Layer SuperMulti Dvd/Cd burner, 8 in 1 card reader,(SD/Mini-SD/MMC/XD/MS/MS-Pro/MS-Duo/MS-Pro-Duo), plus a Load of other ports, and features. Here, take a look at a review of it from Computer Shopper on YouTube:
Review of it on a forum with large photos, and info:
Use’s DDR2 ram, in either 533MHz, or 667MHz SoDIMM, and has support for up to 3GB’s of it. Has the Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT graphics card out for it right now. The 512MB DDR2 version is the top one. Word has it, that Asus is gonna’ have the Nvidia GeForce 8800 series card, made for it late this year. What versions? Dunno. GT, GS, GTS, GTX? I’ve seen the barebones online for as cheap as $687.00. Uses a desktop cpu, so you can search for the best price for that. Ram, has to be Asus C90S version though, and the graphics card. Expensive? See what you think of this build, I did on Directron.com They sell the barebones at a starting price of $730.00 I went with the top of the line cpu they had. E6600. Core2 Duo with two processor cores running at 2.40GHz. Has a 4MB cache, and 1066FSB. 2GB’s of Corsair DDR2 ram, 320GB Western Digital Sata harddrive,(Scorpio), and went to their vid card page, and added the Nvidia GeForce, 8600M GT, 512MB DDR2 card, and WinXP with SP/2. $1635.96 (I went their just now, and they’re sold out! Also didn’t see the 320GB Sata drive listed anymore. These things are goin’ like hotcakes! I need to get sum coins up! lol!)

nah. waste of money. Have you actually seen what you can get with $1500-2000 in a laptop? Realistically you wont get much bang for your buck _and_ most laptops dont have upgradable gpu’s so the machine will not play latest games for much more than 12-18 months tops. Its not a good investment. Better to get a cheap machine if you have to have portability and put the rest of your money into a hot desktop, which _will_ give you bang for your buck.
Desktop would be much more comfortable ergonomically.
