I have a hp pavillion dv5t series on the way.. i just ordered it on christmas so i am very excited but i come to notice that in reviews that i have read; people are saying that they get very hot. what are some ways to cool you’re laptop down? I have though of elevating the back for more curculation but it would be weird to use the mouse and type. Is there some kind of external fan that you can clip to the bottom of your laptop? Sexiest convertible tablet PC ever?

Moonlight laptop(Credit: Modo forum)

The Moonlight laptop isn’t just any boring convertible tablet PC. Though the concept model looks a little thick for our taste, the curvy body and dual LCD screens are enough to cause oodles of drool.

Both displays are touch screen, with the smaller LCD serving as a mouse. The secondary panel can even be used to run a separate operating system or as an extension to the main one. In recognition that a curved body is hardly a stable surface, a pair of flip legs prop up the machine for a more ergonomic position.

This concept was designed by Modo forum member minibraun, a student in Croatia, for a “Laptop of the future” contest (which minibraun didn’t win). Nonetheless, it’s a sexy machine that at least deserves the light of day, even if it never hits retail shelves. More pictures after the jump.

My kid’s Netbook is better than your kid’s Netbook

Specifically marketed with kids in mind, PeeWee PC is a site that offers not only kid-friendly PCs, but also laptops customized for your ever-growing child.

On Wednesday, PeeWee PC is rolling out the Atom-powered PeeWee Pivot Tablet Laptop. The 3-pound PeeWee Pivot Tablet Laptop–which is more of a tablet Netbook than a laptop–sports a rotating screen that converts between a normal notebook orientation and a touch tablet.

Kids can use either a keyboard or an included stylus to interact with their favorite programs or games. The unit features a rugged, spill-resistant case that’s designed to endure the bumps and knocks the younger generation has to offer. So, parents, when your child goes into a temper tantrum and flings the machine around, you might be knocked on your a**, but know that your investment has sustained the fall from your head to the floor.

Kidding aside, the PeeWee Pivot Tablet Laptop runs Windows XP on a 10-inch screen, 1.6GHz Atom processor, 1GB of RAM (upgradeable to 2GB) and a 60GB hard drive. In addition, the tablet has two USB 2.0 ports, an SD/MMC media card reader, a VGA port, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, and a 1.3-megapixel Webcam. Reminiscent of Intel’s Classmate PC in 2007, the Pivot Tablet has a carrying handle that’s removed by taking out the battery and then removing the four screws that affix the handle.

The PeeWee Tablet Laptop ships with game titles for pre-K, early elementary, or upper elementary students, plus a free Walt Disney Windows XP theme, and a proprietary security suite so parents have complete control of how and when kids use the notebook–parents can also view browsing histories, block sites, take screenshots, and control the system remotely.

Laptop Computer Security

· Filed Under Laptops & Notebooks · Comment

More and more laptops are being used today thus making them a prime target of thieves. Its not only the laptop resale value that interests the thieves, but also and more importantly the very sensitive information that’s contained on the laptop hard drives. Airports, Universities, Cafes and similar environments are ideal locations for these thieves to practice their craft!

So lets see what you can do to somehow protect your laptop or notebook from theft.

Physical Protection
Physical laptop protection primarily consists of attaching a some form of locking security cable to the Universal Security Slot (USS) on your laptop - approximately 80% of laptops and notebook computers have a USS slot. By wrapping the security cable around an immovable object means that while it is connected to the laptop you have provided excellent physical security protection. In the even that your laptop doesn’t have a USS slot, you can purchase an adhesive connector that will mount directly to your laptop casing thereby allowing another way to attach the security cable. The security cables are available in a couple of variations - either keyed or combination lock - to allow you to secure them to your laptop. If there isn’t a large unmovable object accessible to wrap the security cable around, you can consider some other anchoring devices available that enable you to attach the cable to cubical walls and other stationary objects. More hi-tech security devices are also available that when attached to your laptop, sound an alarm if the laptop is moved - these are similar to the in-store security alarms attached to products in stores. Remember airports are a great place for thieves to prowl, so this type of physical laptop computer security device becomes very useful when you’ll be traveling with your laptop and have to put it down (e.g. while sitting in the airport awaiting your flight).

Another interesting form of laptop computer security is “Computer Tracking.” This method when installed on your laptop helps to recover stolen laptops and notebook computers by having the computer periodically report its location to a secure server on the internet. When the laptop has been stolen, the user contacts the software company who then marks the computer as stolen so that it will report its location more frequently. They then determine the location of the laptop and work with local police to recover it.

Data Protection
Data protection can fall into these categories:
(a) operating system security
Operating system security covers the normal operating system like vista, xp, linux, mac etc. (and services) security best practices.
(b) sensitive data storage practices, and
Since the data on your laptop might be more valuable to the thief than the laptop itself, it’s always best to use good judgment when storing sensitive information on your machine.
For example, try not to use any option that “remembers” your password - these options are strictly for convenience (so you do not have to reenter your password the next time you connect) and should not be used, especially on laptops.
(c) data encryption.
use data encryption tools to protect those sets of data that you must store on your laptop.

One final note. You might be able to secure a reduction in your computer insurance liability deduction if you let your insurance company know that “Computer Tracking” is installed on the laptop.
